Google Maps 'Cube' game rolls out, back, up, back again

Cast your mind back to January if you will. Head full of steamy CES action? Of course, but you may also remember Google teased us about a new tilt-and-roll Maps game. Well, it looks like the creators may have missed the original February deadline, having finally snuck it out this week. The browser-based game is a series of maze challenges, that'll take you through the streets of San Francisco, downtown Tokyo and beyond. All atop Google's iconic 3D textured maps, naturally. Eight levels in total are on offer, making it an ideal lunchtime -- or if the boss is away -- afternoon time kill. Roll down to the source link below to give it a spin, nudge and roll.

Pitbull Goes 'Back In Time' On 'Men In Black' Video Set

Mr. Worldwide walks MTV News through his 'Back in Time' music video set.

Not only does the "Men in Black" movie franchise boast great acting and stunning visual effects, each of the three films features a pretty kicking soundtrack as well. For "Men in Black 3," which hits theaters May 25, Pitbull contributes the lead single, "Back in Time."

MTV News caught up with Mr. Worldwide on the Los Angeles set of the "Back in Time" video and he gave us a pretty cool walk-through.

"What we're doing here, to sum it up in layman's terms, is making history," Pit said. "The concept is basically all about the movie. The slogan for the movie is 'Back in Time.' In the record I say, 'In order to understand the future we have to go back in time.' "

The clip not only features "MIB3" movie scenes, it was actually filmed on the movie set, blending the Miami rapper's performance shots seamlessly into Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones' action shots. "As far as the sets that you see right now, it's just integrating and running parallel with everything that you see in the movie," Pitbull explained.

It was the Fresh Prince himself who recorded the theme songs — 1997's "Men in Black" and 2002's "Black Suits Comin' " — for the first two installments of the "MIB" trilogy. For the upcoming flick, Pit took over and used a sample of Mickey and Sylvia's 1950s classic "Love Is Strange" for inspiration.

Now that he's clocked his first collaboration with Big Willie, Pitbull hopes that they can work together some more. "I would love to follow in Will Smith's footsteps," he said. "We're working on the music for the movie, and hopefully, one day, we'll work in a movie together."

Q&A Site ChaCha Cancels UK Expansion After Poor User Take-Up

ChaCha PictureCan a reasonably successful, U.S.-based mobile content brand find equal success for its English-language service in the UK? It's a question that could have been asked on the Q&A service ChaCha, and unfortunately it looks like the company has figured out the answer the hard way. ChaCha, which launched in the UK in September 2011, has now quietly shut down operations in the country after failing to find enough people to use the service to make it cost-effective.

Crackdown On Download Bots Meant Installs For Top iOS Apps Took A Dive In March

web-botsDownloads for the top 200 free apps in the U.S. iTunes app store took a 30 percent dive in March, according to Fiksu, a Charles River Ventures-backed company that helps mobile developers find users cheaply. The culprit? Two things. One is that we're just coming out of the very lucrative holiday season, when downloads spike and people get new phones that they're eager to experiment with through trying tons of apps. The other may be Apple's crackdown on download bots, or automated programs that downloads apps tens of thousands of times to help them break into the top of the charts. Fiksu says that the top 200 free U.S. iPhone apps saw 4.45 million downloads per day in March, down from 6.35 million per day in February. Apple issued a warning to developers during the first week of February, telling them not to use services that explicitly manipulate the charts.

Nicki Minaj's 'Starships' Video: All Hail The Queen

Young Money rapper throws a futuristic beach party in Anthony Mandler-directed clip.

Yes, starships were meant to fly, and rap's reigning queen was clearly meant to don a bikini and throw raving beach parties. Nicki Minaj finally released her "Starships" video Thursday night (April 26), and all her Barbz were invited to an electric beach party.

The Anthony Mandler-directed clip begins with a computer-generated UFO circling a tranquil Hawaiian island looking for a soft spot to land. While the natives lie on the beach, Ms. Minaj gets beamed down into the shallow waters sporting green hair and a sexy pink bathing suit.

It was back in March when pictures from the set first made their way online, and now that the video is finally here, it was clearly worth the wait. To see the Young Money starlet in motion is a thing of beauty. Not only does the curvaceous rap star frolic in the water, she then crawls through the sand on all fours creating a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue sort of moment.

The Minaj idol worship is in full effect as buff and tattooed male servants carry her around the island like the queen she is, but as the beat on the RedOne-produced dance hit picks up, so does the video's action. By the time the song's electro breakdown kicks in, the party gets jumping and Mandler employs a groovy kaleidoscope visual effect, which precisely captures the track's energy.

The clip climaxes as bonfires are set, flaming staffs are twirled and body paint is tossed about. Nicki parties hard with her flock jumping up and down, fist-pumping and dancing the night away. There's no grand story line or deep, hidden meaning; instead the Harajuku Barbie simply offers up a good time. The "Starships" video isn't exactly rocket science, it's just fly — exactly how it was meant to be.

Big Time Rush Declare Themselves 'Best Boy Band Of All Time'

But, Battle of the Boy Bands competitors also show love for 'NSYNC.
By John Mitchell

The competition continues to heat up in MTV News' Battle of the Boy Bands. Some huge favorites are falling behind as some unexpected fans come out of the woodwork to vote for their favorite groups.

At this point in the competition, Big Time Rush are well ahead of '90s R&B hitmakers All For One in their showdown, but anything can happen right up until voting closes today (April 26) at noon. So, the boys are here to tell you why you should vote for them and keep them in the race for the boy-band crown.

Highest Chart Achievement
The band, which was created for its namesake Nickelodeon show, enjoyed its strongest sales week ever when its November 2011 album, Elevate, debuted with over 70,000 in sales. However, their debut, 2010's BTR, while selling fewer copies (67,000) in its opening frame, actually enjoyed a higher chart position, debuting at an astounding #3 to Elevate's #12.

Standout Video
For sheer Backstreet nostalgia alone, it's got to be "Worldwide." The clip features the guys — Kendall Schmidt, James Maslow, Carlos Pena Jr. and Logan Henderson — in all-white outfits, crooning their hearts out ballad-style, while hanging out in an airline terminal. The homage to the Backstreet Boys' "I Want It That Way" is undeniable — and we mean that as the highest of compliments.

Defining Tune
Well, that depends who you ask. "Boyfriend," the band's first official single sent to U.S. radio, remains their strongest-performing track on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #72. However, the band and its fans certainly have a connection with "Music Sounds Better With U," which was co-written by the band and Ryan Tedder — yes, that Ryan Tedder, a hitmaker in his own right with OneRepublic, who is currently one of the hottest songwriters in the world after his work with Beyoncé and Adele, among many others, earned much acclaim and major sales. The song inspired the name of their 2012 "Better With U" tour.

Debut Album
The aforementioned BTR, which went gold here in the U.S.

Biggest Competition
While they are up against All 4 One in round one of the competition, they aren't really the band's biggest threat in the overall competition. Interestingly, that position is held by some close friends of the band — fellow teen dreams One Direction. Big Time Rush and One Direction toured together earlier this year, right before 1D broke out big time.

So, why should you vote for Big Time Rush? Well, the boys themselves came up with a pretty good reason: "I know the other boy bands are really awesome, but seriously, Big Time Rush is the best boy band of all time," Henderson declared.

Pena added, "Not to mention that we have the best fans. So, all you Rushers out there, we love you."

The boys themselves had little trouble zeroing in on their own personal favorite boy band. After name-checking their fandom of several boy bands, from 98 Degrees and the Backstreet Boys to Hanson, the guys went with their gut and said the answer was easy: 'NSYNC.

Voting in round one of MTV's Battle of the Boy Bands is now open and runs until noon ET today (April 26). Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite band made the cut, make sure you keep voting. Spread the word on Twitter using the hashtag #BBB and like us on Facebook for updates!

Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Battle of the Boy Bands interactive bracket!

American Idol Top 6 Performances: Choosing Wisely?

The top six on American Idol were given two tasks on last night's performance show:

  1. Cover a Queen classic.
  2. Cover any song your heart your heart desires.

The latter option led to tracks made famous by artists such as Jim Hendrix, Miley Cyrus and Dave Matthews. Who came out on top? Whose second round performance makes him/her deserving of your vote? Watch them all now and then cast it...

Jessica Sanchez initiated the second round of performances with a take on Luther Vandross. She just wants to "Dance With My Father," people.

Skylar Laine then followed up a terrific version of "The Show Must Go On" with a flawless cover of "Tattoos on This Town." She's our favorite at this point.

Hollie Cavanagh didn't reach far back for her selection, honoring Miley Cyrus with the following rendition of "The Climb."

Joshua Ledet made India Arie proud with a lovely performance of "Ready For Love."

Elise Testone making like Hendrix? The finalist actually pulled it off well with this cover of  "Bold As Love."

And, finally, in the least surprising choice of the night, Phillip Phillips emulated Dave Matthews with "The Stone."
