Grizzlies hand Knicks first loss, 105-95

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) ? Zach Randolph had 20 points and 15 rebounds, Marc Gasol added 24 points and the Memphis Grizzlies handed the New York Knicks their first loss of the season with a 105-95 victory on Friday night.

Rudy Gay scored 17 points and blocked four shots, and Mike Conley added 16 points and eight assists as Memphis won its seventh straight. The Grizzlies own the NBA's best record for the first time in franchise history at 7-1.

Carmelo Anthony scored 20 points for New York, which was trying to start 7-0 for the first time since the 1993-94 team that reached the NBA Finals. Raymond Felton scored 18 points and handed out five assists. Rasheed Wallace scored 13 points, shooting 6 of 10.

The Knicks shot 51 percent for the game, but Memphis had 12 offensive rebounds, leading to a 22-12 advantage in second-chance points.

Memphis led by as many as 21 in the third quarter and still held a 19-point lead in the early stages of the final period.

The Knicks answered with a 12-3 rally and appeared poised to make a comeback reminiscent of Thursday night's win at San Antonio, when New York outscored the Spurs 27-11 in the final 7:14 for a 104-100 victory.

But New York never got closer than eight the rest of the way.

With the 10-point win, the Grizzlies defeated the Miami Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder ? last season's NBA finalists ? and the previously undefeated Knicks by double digits this week.

The game got a bit testy in the second quarter as the Grizzlies' Jerryd Bayless and New York's J.R. Smith got into it, earning double technicals. Gay got a tech when he disagreed with a no-call on a dunk attempt.

And through all that, Wallace was mouthing with everyone from the Grizzlies bench to the officials to the fans.

Memphis led 54-49 at the break, both teams shooting well. The Knicks hit at a 57 percent clip, while Memphis connected on 54 percent. Conley had 13 for Memphis, while Anthony had 14 for the Knicks.

Wallace already had matched his season high with 10 points before intermission.

Memphis opened the second half with a 23-7 spurt. Gasol had eight in the run, and the Knicks continued picking up technical fouls.

The Grizzlies' rally built the advantage to 77-56 when Tony Allen converted a three-point play after Smith was called for a flagrant foul on Allen's drive.

New York cut into the margin slightly, but Memphis still carried an 85-67 lead into the fourth after outscoring the Knicks 31-18 in the period.

The Knicks started a comeback to open the fourth period, outscoring Memphis 12-3 in the early stages of the period.

That got New York within 91-81 with 6:18 left on Felton's jumper in the lane.

NOTES: Memphis has won 15 straight regular-season home games. Memphis' last loss during the regular season at home was last March 16 to Toronto in overtime. . Smith came into the game leading the league in 3-point shooting on 14 of 19. He ended the night 0 for 3 from outside the arc. . The Knicks finished their three-game road trip at 2-1. . Wallace's 13 points and 24 minutes were season highs in both categories.

Moving the needle: a conversation with BCBSLAF Executive ...

?

Executive Director Christy Reeves

By Tina Dirmann

staff writer for BCBS of Louisiana Foundation

Earlier this year, the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation launched Challenge for a Healthier Louisiana, a multi-million dollar grant program designed to motivate communities across Louisiana to take on the state?s health crisis. It was a bold move designed to halt the state?s slide to the bottom in national studies on health and fitness.

In Louisiana today, more than 60% of the adult population is considered obese (and 30% of kids are following along). And with skyrocketing obesity comes companion issues, like soaring blood pressure numbers and diabetes rates.

Recently, the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge released a state report card, meant to measure the overall health and physical activity of Louisiana?s youth. A series of D?s and F?s filled the report card, for the fifth year in a row.

Determined to find new solutions, BCBSLAF put out a call to arms to city officials and leading non-profits, challenging them to come up with hands-on plans for change, the kind daring enough to actually turn the tide on Louisiana?s dismal health grades. In the end, the foundation and their partner organizations (12 plans involving 500 agencies across the state) pledged $27 million toward making a difference. Pennington Biomedical Research Center, renowned for its studies on health and nutrition, will oversee the implementation and effectiveness of each plan.

We spoke to BCBSLA Foundation Executive Director Christy Reeves, who has been deeply involved in the creation and launch of the movement, about this innovative program, and the master plan to ?move the needle,? as she likes to say, on health and fitness across the state.

?

Q:???????? You use that term a lot, ?move the needle,? when it comes to raising health and fitness standards in the state. What do you mean by that?

A:???????? I mean, how do we make a difference. A real, concrete difference. The truth is, Louisiana has terrible health statistics. We usually rank 48th or 49th in terms of our health. Our board of directors got together and said, ?How do we change that statistic? How do we move up to 30th and then 25th and then beyond?? How can we actually make an impact and, yes, move the needle.

?

Q: ? ? ? ? ? So the plan was born from a passion to somehow break through to people and really help them change in a way that hasn?t been seen previously?

A:???????? Well, for five years in a row, we?ve seen this report card. And for five years, the major health practitioners in the state get together to discuss change and we get excited about change. And then, that?s it, no movement in our numbers. So, it?s pretty difficult not to work in this field and see we have to do something different. It was disheartening to see our numbers, but at the same time, it motivated us to do something different. And this is going to do it. I believe that.

?

Q: ???????? Why? Why so much confidence in the Challenge initiatives?

A:???????? Because this is not just grant making? This is building a movement.

?

Q:???????? Explain what you mean by that.

A: ???????? We?ve put the right partners together, throughout the state, to target those critical areas we need to change ? activities for kids, for communities, access to healthy food, nutrition education. We have 500 organizations working together to make this happen. No one is working in a vacuum. Every program compliments each other. And the overall effect will be a change in attitudes, in individuals, in communities, in the state as a whole.

?

Q: ???????? I know there are participants from all over the state, including New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Shreveport, LaSalle? And even more applied to be a part of the grant program, right?

A: ???????? Yes,? we had 49 applicants pledging a total of $110 million. We couldn?t fund them all. But you know, we asked a lot of those we couldn?t help if they still planned on going forward with their programs, without our assistance. And 70% said yes. That?s amazing. I believe there?s enough energy in this project to keep going even beyond us, without us. And that?s what it?s about ?starting that ?it takes a village? mentality. It has to be an entire community working together or it will never work.

?

Q:???????? Why do you think you got such a positive response? What is it about this program that excited people?

A:???????? Because people are hungry for this change and we?ve clearly touched a nerve. We?re just the key that started the engine, but we aren?t running the whole car. It takes a lot of pieces working together to make this work. And it?s happening. A lot of people have come together to make this a reality. And that?s why we?ll see the change. That?s why we?ll see that needle move.

?

Jenny and Levi married in March of this year, and soon decided they wanted a baby -- despite her past fertility problems and his vasectomy. After he had his procedure reversed, they tried for a baby, but weren't very optimistic.

"However, we are SO excited? elated?.and still in shock that we are getting to experience this amazing miracle together and add another precious life to our already precious and abundant brood!" she explained. "All 8 children are so excited. They talk to the baby; kiss the baby; fight over who is going to sleep with the baby, hold the baby and help with the baby. It is so very, very sweet to see their little minds work and the fondness they have towards this unborn sibling of theirs!"

Jenny is currently 28 weeks along and expecting a son.

A Decent Life Is the Train That Hasn?t Hit You

Slum in Mumbai. Residents hunt for usable items from the burnt remains of a slum area in Mumbai in 2011.

On Wednesday Katherine Boo?s Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity won the 2012 National Book Awards in nonfiction. The minutely researched, compassionately reported account of waste-pickers in an Indian slum earned praise for its ?interview-based narrative in which the interviewer never appears.? In a recent Q&A, Boo explained that ?when you spend years in a single place, you get to know the children whose perspectives you can trust.? Elaine Blair introduced us to one such child?and his family?in her review of Boo?s book last February. The original piece is printed below. ? ??

Katherine Boo, a Pulitzer-winning journalist and New Yorker staff writer, has many ways of illuminating the people she writes about. The most important and obvious is that she listens closely and intelligently. But the most unusual is that she teases them?or lets them tease themselves. You can feel the richness of her affection in her ironic appreciation of their oddities. When, for example, in her spellbinding first book, Behind the Beautiful Forevers (Random House), we meet Abdul Husain, a 19-year-old resident of the Mumbai slum called Annawadi, we first hear him tell us of his shortcomings: ?Allah, in his impenetrable wisdom, had cut him small and jumpy,? Boo writes. ?A coward: Abdul said it of himself ?. What he knew about, mainly, was trash.?

Abdul buys recyclables that the neighborhood?s waste-pickers have scavenged and then resells it in bulk to local recycling plants. He works with his mother, Zehrunisa, who haggles with the waste-pickers. In Abdul?s view, her ?one great flaw? is ?the language she used when haggling. Although profane bargaining was the norm in the waste business, he felt his mother acceded to that norm with too much relish.?

Abdul and Zehrunisa are two of a handful of Annawadians whose fortunes Boo follows closely in the book. Behind the Beautiful Forevers is the product of Boo?s three and a half years of reporting (with the help of translators) in Annawadi.? The slum is home to 3,000 people (crammed into 335 huts) and unknown numbers of goats, feral pigs, and water buffalo. Lest you get the wrong idea: ?Almost no one in this slum was considered poor by official Indian benchmarks.? In spite of the fact that a few residents have to trap frogs and rats to fill out their meals, the slum is officially reckoned a success story, full of people on their way out of poverty, and the frog-eaters give other, non-frog-eating Annawadians ?a felt sense of their own upward mobility.? Annawadi was built illegally on land next to the Mumbai International Airport and is under constant threat of slum clearance. It is surrounded by new luxury hotels, which make it ?magnificently positioned for a trafficker in rich people?s garbage.?

Many Annawadians make their small livings as trash scavengers. Abdul, as a buyer, is a rank above. His main job is to sort the valuable trash into one of 60 categories of paper, plastic, and metal. As the book opens in January 2008, Abdul has been steadily enriching his family (his parents and eight siblings) for several years with his trade. Their hut now has four solid walls (instead of the old sheet dividing them from their neighbors), and they?ve been saving money for payments on a plot of land outside the city.

Abdul sits in Annawadi?s main square (actually an empty dirt lot) most of the day sorting, and this gives him time to watch his neighbors and think. Boo, who never uses the word I and usually sticks closely to her subjects? points of view, limits her own interpretations to a short author?s note at the end of the book. It is Abdul who supplies a lot of the book?s trenchant analysis of slum life.

It seemed to him that in Annawadi, fortunes derived not just from what people did, or how well they did it, but from the accidents and catastrophes they avoided. A decent life was the train that hadn?t hit you, the slumlord you hadn?t offended, the malaria you hadn?t caught.

To put it another way, what you don?t want is plot: When dramatic things happen in Annawadi, they are bad, not good. On the other hand, by this measure, a decent life for Abdul would be more of the same: working with garbage, ?work that churned so much filth into the air it turned his snot black.? His dream for the future: a wife ?who didn?t much mind how he smelled? and a home somewhere other than Annawadi.

Plot can also be a pitfall for a journalist. When writing about lives punctuated by violence, ruination, and stressful encounters with civic, medical, and commercial institutions, it is easy to lose sight of the person at the center of the drama, the one who is constantly making choices and recalibrating her sense of her life and possibilities. Boo, who has also reported extensively in poor neighborhoods across the United States, has always focused precisely on her subjects? choices. When we first meet them, they seem like the heroes and heroines of 19th-century novels: They are on the make, or they hope to be, and they have a complex view of their lives and their place in the social landscape. As Boo follows them around, we see how much they are able to make of their limited and sometimes downright lousy options?and we also see the kind of daily binds that make it so difficult, when you start at the bottom, to get economic purchase.

Eventually, plot catches up with Abdul Husain. His next-door neighbor, Fatima, attempts suicide by self-immolation and then accuses Abdul, his father, and his sister of driving her to suicide by beating and threatening her. There are hundreds of witnesses to disprove Fatima?s claim, but that?s not the point. Everyone knows that Abdul?s family has some money socked away, and now everyone sees an angle for getting some of it.

Police officers arrest the accused and demand bribes to release them; a government official coaxes a written accusation from Fatima, then uses the document as leverage against the Husains; the Annawadi village fixer, Asha, offers to make the problem go away for a fee. When Abdul?s mother refuses to pay most bribes, all three of the accused Husains are held in jail and beaten. Abdul is then sent to a juvenile correctional facility.

The arrests, incarceration, and court trials of the Husains give us an inside view of the Indian criminal justice system, and there is nothing good to see. At least as far as the Husains? case is concerned, it is a vast spectacle of corruption and incompetence in which bribes are required at every step. Abdul quickly sees that ?the Indian criminal justice system was a market like garbage.? We wish that he had been spared this firsthand knowledge; Boo makes sure we are always aware that our own education in Indian criminal justice for the poor is the result of the Husains? misfortune.

In a New Yorker piece about Mumbai slum life, Boo once wrote critically about the movie Slumdog Millionaire and its fraudulent conceit ?that a child?s specific miserable experiences might be the things that spring him from his deprivation.? Abdul?s specific miserable experiences of arrest and incarceration certainly do no such thing; while he is in juvenile detention, his family?s garbage-sorting business flounders and never picks up again. Another of his younger brothers has to drop out of school so he can help earn money for the family. The Husains lose the deposit they had put down on the plot of land outside the city.?

Incredibly, however, Abdul?s time in juvenile detention (where, unlike at the local jail, he is not beaten but largely left to his own devices) does enlarge his sympathies. In Annawadi, Abdul had been ?overwhelmed by his own work and worry.? His stay at the detention center, he realizes later, ?was the first long rest he?d ever had.? While there, ?something had happened to his heart.? He finds himself feeling sorry for other people. He finds in himself a desire to be generous and noble. When he is released on parole, he brings this desire back home with him.

What are the prospects for a young man with broadened sympathies and a sharpened sense of justice back in Annawadi? Abdul?s first resolution is not to trade in stolen recyclables, which he normally buys and sells with the legally scavenged trash.

Boo has never put forward policy suggestions or articulated political ideals, but in her American reporting she has considered the effects of specific policy initiatives on the lives of the people she writes about. Here, too, she writes about a number of different laws and policies that come to bear on the lives of Annawadians. (In addition to her field reporting she has also ?used more than three thousand public records.?) But, as her reporting painstakingly reveals, the effect of any single policy is dwarfed by the general mad siphoning of money into private hands that goes on at every turn and every income level. Some women in Annawadi make money by taking government-subsidized micro-loans for poor women and lending the money to even poorer women at a higher interest rate. The nuns at a local orphanage are selling donated foods that have passed their expiration date to poor women who then resell them to the public at roadside stands. Patients at the local hospital have to buy their medicine elsewhere?everything in the hospital?s supply cabinets gets pilfered and resold.

It is in this context of financial free-for-all that we must consider the remarkable case of a teenage garbage trafficker who decides to draw a line between legally obtained scrap metal and illegally obtained scrap metal. Boo describes Abdul?s shifting moral sensibility without sentimentality or emotional punctuation. He tries, for a while, to stick to his resolution, but finds that he can?t make enough money only on legal trash. As he puts it, ?I tell Allah now I love him immensely, immensely. But I tell him I cannot be better, because of how the world is.?

Panetta: Don't jump to conclusions about Allen

PERTH, Australia (AP) ? Defense Secretary Leon Panetta cautioned Wednesday against reaching early conclusions about the veracity of allegations against the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Gen. John Allen, who is under investigation for what Pentagon officials have said may be "inappropriate" correspondence with a Florida woman linked to the David Petraeus sex scandal.

At a news conference in Australia's Indian Ocean coastal city of Perth, Panetta sought to tamp down a wave of speculation about the nature of Allen's actions, which have added a new dimension to the Petraeus matter.

"No one should leap to any conclusions here," Panetta said in his first public comments on the matter when a reporter asked what Allen might have done wrong. Panetta declined to characterize Allen's actions in any way.

Panetta said he supports Allen, who has been in command in Kabul since July 2011. He took over that summer for Petraeus, who retired from the Army to head the CIA.

"He certainly has my continued confidence to lead our forces and to continue the fight," Panetta said.

The Pentagon chief declined to explain the nature of Allen's correspondence with Jill Kelley, the Florida socialite connected to the scandal that led to Petraeus' resignation last week as director of the CIA.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who appeared with Panetta and their Australian counterparts at Wednesday's news conference, declined to comment on the Allen case except to suggest it has not harmed the war effort.

She said U.S. officials have discussed the matter with allied officials.

"There has been a lot of conversation, as you might expect, but no concern whatsoever being expressed to us because the mission has been set forth and it's being carried out," Clinton said.

Panetta announced Tuesday while flying to Australia that he had ordered the Defense Department's inspector general to investigate Allen based on material referred to the Pentagon on Sunday by the FBI. Pentagon officials said the material included at least 20,000 pages of Allen correspondence.

Allen told Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, that he is innocent of misconduct, according to Col. David Lapan, Dempsey's spokesman.

Lapan said Wednesday that Dempsey called Allen on Tuesday from Perth, where Dempsey attended meetings with Panetta. Dempsey has not commented publicly.

Panetta had also announced Tuesday that the Obama administration put on hold Allen's nomination to be the next commander of U.S. European Command and the top NATO general. Allen's Senate confirmation hearing was to have been held Thursday.

Panetta said in Perth that putting a hold on the nomination was the "prudent" thing to do.

Allen, who was in Washington when Panetta announced the investigation and has not yet returned to his headquarters in Kabul, has not publicly commented on the matter.
